Marldon's 14th century church is worth a visit.
Near here the annual 'Apple Pie Fair' dating back to the 18th century has recently been revived and is held on the last Saturday in July.
'Don' in Marldon means 'hill'.
Walk 1 Berry Pomeroy Castle (5.7 miles)
Difficulty:
A long but not too strenuous country walk to Berry Pomeroy Castle following picturesque sections of the John Musgrave Heritage Trail.
The Walk
A The public footpath path takes you along Marldon Christmas Tree farm.
BThere is a short stretch along the old Totnes Road containing some traffic.
C A small diversion leads you to the site of old Torbay Aircraft Museum.
Unfortunately all aircraft have been sold and the museum no longer exists.
D Berry Pomeroy Castle is now owned by English Heritage - check here for prices & opening times.
You follow the well signed and carefully maintained John Musgrave Heritage Trail back to Marldon.
E Old village of Marldon.
The church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist , was built in the 14th century.

Walk 2 Berry Pomeroy Castle (9.1 miles)
Difficulty:
A great 9 mile hike to Berry Pomeroy castle exploring the tranquil countryside north west of Marldon.
The route returns via the impressive John Musgrave Trail.
There are unfortunately no pubs en route.
the busy A381 has to be crossed twice - both without islands. This makes the walk unsuitable for children. |
Walk 3 Strainytor Copse (2.5 miles)
Difficulty:
This walk follows public footpaths and quiet lanes and joins part of the John Musgrave Heritage Trail.
Walk 4 Gallows Gate (5.4 miles)
Difficulty:
A very pleasant 5 mile hike to Cockington using a new cycle path to Gallows Gate.
It follows part of the popular John Musgrave Trail.
