Torquay Walks exploring the English Riviera
 

The quay , it is believed , was built by monks who lived in a monastery near a Tor (craggy peak) - see Torre Abbey below.

After the battle of Waterloo Napoleon on his way to Elba became an unexpected tourist attraction when people hired boats to see him basking on HMS Bellerophon!

Walk 1

Walk 1 One hour-ish town walk (2.3 miles) Time:1h

Although this is a short walk allow 1.5 hours
A This great circular walk exploring Torquay magnificent coast line starts at Torquay Harbour.
Walk up Tor street for 100m then turn right into Parkhill Road.Turn 2nd left into Meadford Road.
B After Park Court Hotel on right turn left into Hesketh Road. Continue past some steps on either side. The road becomes unpaved and eventually zigzags to Meadford Beach - ignore any tracks on left.
C Turn right and follow the South West Coast Footpath (symbol is an acorn).
There is a cafe at Meadord Beach , but is not directly on your route.
D Soon the path branches left from Daddyhole Road. Part of this stretch can be quite narrow.
E Enjoy extensive views of the bay.
Follow the path back to Torquay harbour.

A varied Town walk combining the harbour with Torre Abbey dating back to 1196. The abbey was built near a Saxon hamlet . The monks established the first quay.
