The Saxons, Danes, Alfred the Great , William the Conqueror,Henry VI,Roundheads and Cavaliers all play a part in its often violent history.
During the middle ages a castle was built, now in private hands.

Do not be deterred by Shakespeare who has KING RICHARD III saying
'Richmond! When last I was at Exeter,
The mayor in courtesy show'd me the castle,
And call'd it Rougemont: at which name I started,
Because a bard of Ireland told me once
I should not live long after I saw Richmond.'

This easy walk passes Rougemont Castle & Cricklepit Mill, the last of the nine water mills which in the past ensured Exeter's prosperity.
Information panels are positioned along the walk.
Caution: GPS signals are often inaccurate between tall buildings. It might be worth printing the map.
