The Burgh Island Story
In the early Middle Ages, Burgh Island was home to a monastery. The remains of the monastery can still be seen today.
In the 1890s, the music hall star George H Chirgwin built a prefabricated wooden house on the island, which was used by guests for weekend parties.
In 1927, the island was sold to the filmmaker Archibald Nettlefold, who built a more substantial hotel in an Art Deco style.
Burgh Island was a popular destination for celebrities and other wealthy people in the 1930s. Agatha Christie was a regular visitor, and she wrote two of her novels, And Then There Were None and Evil Under the Sun, on the island.
During World War II, the hotel was used as a military hospital.
In the 1960s, the hotel fell into decline, but it was restored to its former glory in the early 2000s. Today, Burgh Island is a popular tourist destination, and it is still home to a hotel.
